Diversity Efforts

The evidence is clear: diversity in STEM is bad, diversity in geoscience is the worst of the STEM fields, and I’d argue that diversity in glaciology is the worst of geoscience disciplines. We’re committed to doing better.

Ten simple rules for building an antiracist lab. From Chaudhary and Berhe.
1. Lead informed discussions about antiracism in your lab regularly.
2. Address racism in your lab and field safety guidelines
3. Publish papers and write grants with BIPOC colleagues
4. Evaluate your lab's mentoring practices
5. Amplify voices of BIPOC scientists in your field
6. Support BIPOC in their efforts to organize
7. Intentionally recruit BIPCO students and staff
8. Adopt a dynamic research agenda
9. Advocate for racially diverse leadership in science
10. Hold the powerful accountable and don't expect gratitude

Talk: We read and discuss diversity in academia papers monthly in our lab meetings. A great resource of papers.

Amplify: We amplify and support (and donate to) our BIPOC colleagues at Polar Impact and BlackInGeosciences.

Policies: We are developing policies in our lab and department to build a more inclusive environment. Our initial focus is on fieldwork and field trip policies.

Listen: We are producing surveys that allow us to more easily listen to the experiences of our students (in particular, annual culture surveys and post-fieldwork/field trip surveys for undergraduates and graduates).
